The use of Earth Quake Bolts in Charleston, SC:  "Not all the so-called 'Earthquake bolts' were installed after the Charleston earthquake of 1886. 'Earthquake bolts' or gib plates (the outer washers and nuts of strengthening rods that are inserted through the structure) were fairly common in South Carolina's port city at the time of the earthquake; however, they were more apt to safeguard buildings from the high winds and the driving rains of gales and hurricanes than to protect structures from the rending and wrenching of earthquakes."  For more information about the South Carolina Earthquake and for photos:  www.eas.slu.edu/Earthquake_Center/1886EQ/

Primarily used to keep masonry walls from bulging and spreading out over time, leading to structural damage and ultimately collapse. These particular styles are seen studding and reinforcing masonry buildings built in the federal period in the late 1700's and throughout the 1800's. These castings are made from authentic and original patterns.  Current wall washer applications may include structural reinforcement in new construction, historic buildings & restoration, retaining walls, and applied as decorative elements.
